Big cardamom is a significant cash crop in Sikkim and the Darjeeling district of West Bengal, boasting an annual production exceeding 4,000 metric tons from approximately 17,000 hectares of cultivation area. India ranks as the second-largest producer of big cardamom globally, contributing 37% to the world production, with Sikkim alone accounting for up to 90% of India's output. While cultivation also occurs in parts of Uttarakhand and other northeastern states, Sikkim's big cardamom is particularly favored for its unique aroma and color. As a major exporter, India primarily serves markets in Pakistan, Singapore, and the Middle East, where the preference for Sikkim's big cardamom remains prominent.
